As soon as they were dismissed, Lock, Shock, and Barrel traipsed from Town Hall through the town gates to the festering pit they called home. Ever since Oogie Boogieâs attempt to rule town as the Bug King had failed, he had taken up residence in the wastelands. Since he was persona non grata in town, heâd decided to create his own kingdom of worms.
Not even the mischievous trick-or-treaters could stomach Oogie Boogieâs dank, wriggling den, so instead they lived in a tree house right over it, built in the burned-out remains of what had once been the largest tree in the area, before Oogie Boogie had burned that whole part of the forest down.
They dashed across a swinging bridge to the base of their tree house, where they tumbled into a hanging cage that served as an elevator between their tree house and Oogie Boogieâs lair.
They pulled off their masks.
âKidnap the Sandy Claws!â Shock said, rattling the cageâs bars. âThis is big, boys. Real big!â
âWe could draw straws to see who gets to do it,â Barrel offered, holding up three thin bones of various lengths.
âNo way, this will take all three of us!â Shock threw the lever that raised the cage into their tree house of horrors. Once it stopped, they tumbled out into their home. âI know!â she said. âWeâll set a trap. Put in bait he canât resist. And thenâ¦bam! We trap the fat man.â
Barrel scampered across the living room and grabbed a mousetrap. He placed his lollipop inside the trap to illustrate her point. A shiny beetle trotted into the trap, and Shock closed the cage door behind it. Barrel snatched up the trapped bug with a cruel gleam in his eye.
âI have a better idea!â Lock said, jumping on the table they used as a kitchen counter. He filled a pot to the brim and then set it on the oven to boil. âWeâll push that juicy red lobster-man into a giant pot and watch him boil alive!â
Barrel tossed the bug in the mousetrap to him. Lock caught it and doused the poor bug in the boiling vat while licking his lips. âOoh, heâd taste good with some butter!â After a minute, Lock fished out the caged bug, which had turned green and sickly.
He tossed the cage to Shock.
Clutching the poor caged bug, Shock twirled over to the wall of their tree house that was covered with various Halloween masks hanging on nails. In the center of the wall, a chute opened. It snaked down from the tree house into Oogie Boogieâs deep pit below.
Shock hurled the caged bug down the chute, and the other two bowed.
They listened to the clank-clank-clank as the cage tumbled down the long chute. Then they began to giggle along to the clanking sounds.
Lock eyed a cannon and fireworks in the corner of the room and suggested, âWhy donât we just blow Sandy Claws up?â
Shock smacked him in the head. âYou dolt. Youâre no better than the worms. If we bring Mr.
